However, the company’s background check solution couldn’t keep pace with the competitive talent market. Easy integration with iCIMS was at the top of TDIndustries’ must-have list for a new background check solution. The previous system, explains Derek Dostal, Vice President of Talent Acquisition, was entirely manual and integrated only minimally with iCIMS—alerting hiring managers to the completed checks, without data about the progress or any roadblocks in finishing checks. Managing the progress of several hundred background checks was time-consuming and offered little to no visibility into progress of specific checks.

For Derek, an efficient and seamlessly integrated background check solution isn’t only essential to the talent teams that use it daily. Fast turnaround times and visibility into the status of background checks from specific agencies or candidate types are also vital for the organization’s brand in terms of talent. “Shortening the process is absolutely critical so that the experience for all new hires and candidates is as strong as possible—and so they know they're joining the proper company,” Derek says.
TDIndustries’ previous background check solution required Derek and his team to phone clinical providers for drug testing to make appointments on behalf of candidates and manually follow up on results. The extra time could stretch the background check process out by several days—creating opportunities for candidates to take other jobs or drop out of the running.
“Our projects are in multiple states, and our background checks can be complex—we need both county and national checks,” Derek explains. “With Checkr integrated with iCIMS, we save several days in the process of completing clinical checks, because we no longer make repeated follow-up calls.”
Not only did TDIndustries see success in a cost reduction of 10% and an improvement in average turnaround times of 40% from switching to Checkr—but also experienced headcount savings. “Checkr saves us about 40 hours a week just in processing time by the recruiting team,” Derek says. “That’s easily one full-time position.”

The process of integrating Checkr with iCIMS went so smoothly that, “it shocked me!” Derek says. “I was prepared for it to take several months. Instead it was more like turning on a light switch and we were done.”
Derek also points to Checkr’s hands-on guidance expertise as key factors in the fast and smooth implementation. “We noticed the amount of time Checkr took so that we could make good decisions,” he says. “They assisted us with demos with business leaders, just to make sure I had buy-in. Checkr’s patience was important to us.”
With the Checkr-iCIMS integration, Derek and his team were able to see the current status and estimated completion time for each in-progress check directly within iCIMS. Once a background check was complete, talent team members could also view final status, download a PDF of the full report, or click into Checkr to begin the adjudication process—all without leaving iCIMS.
“It’s also important to us that Checkr offers checks at both the county and national levels,” Derek says. County and national entities that TDIndustries recruitment team previously needed to follow up with by phone now respond automatically to Checkr’s automated requests.
Compliance is critical for background check solutions. “Checkr is in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which gives us confidence that we’re respecting the rights of candidates,” Derek says.
