The Hawx - Checkr Story

Hawx is a technology-first pest control company that prides itself on innovative solutions to pest management. As a company that hires for many safety-sensitive positions, Hawx requires a reliable system for conducting background checks and drug screenings for its employees.

Before implementing Checkr, Hawx’s People team encountered numerous problems with their previous background check provider. The system’s lack of scalability posed a problem as it could only accommodate one administrator, forcing the team to share login credentials. Furthermore, their previous vendor only handled criminal background checks, and didn't offer services for drug testing or motor vehicle record (MVR) screenings.

During their search for a new applicant tracking system (ATS), Checkr was recommended by ClearCompany, and Hawx decided to make the switch after learning about Checkr’s customer and candidate support resources, robust reporting and analytics, and innovative roadmap.

At Hawx, Brittany Hansen leads the People Operations team responsible for recruiting. Using Checkr, her team regularly conducts background checks on potential employees for positions such as customer service representatives and service professionals. Due to the company's seasonal nature, most hiring takes place during the summer, with over 150 background checks completed each month.

Hawx uses Checkr to run pre-employment criminal background checks on all candidates. For safety-sensitive roles, Hawx also partners with Checkr to run five-panel drug tests and MVR checks, along with random drug testing.

Before using Checkr for random drug testing, Brittany and her team had created their own manual internal process using an Excel spreadsheet and formulas. This method of random testing was extremely inefficient; if the spreadsheet was refreshed incorrectly, it would generate an entirely new list, even if the drug tests had already been initiated.

Before Checkr swooped in and saved the day, the way that we were planning on doing random testing was very manual. Checkr has probably saved us at least five hours whenever we do a random drug testing.

As soon as Hawx had the opportunity to try Checkr’s new random drug testing product, Brittany immediately opted in. “The implementation was really quick and the Checkr team was very helpful. And it's helped us stay compliant with our safety sensitive positions,” Brittany said. “All we do is choose the percentage, so it’s really easy to use. Checkr does all the work.” After the Hawx team orders tests for employees that are randomly selected, they receive the results within 24 hours.

Brittany particularly appreciates the drug testing options offered by Checkr because they allow candidates and workers to select a location closest to or most convenient for them. Alternatively, Hawx, as the employer, can choose a testing location for their candidates and workers. This is especially valuable given Hawx's widespread presence and operations in multiple states.

Another of Brittany’s favorite Checkr features is the ability to create custom rules for their MVR checks, which has saved Brittany and her team a lot of time when it comes to reviewing reports. Their auto insurance has different restrictions for who they allow onto the insurance policy, so it’s important for them to hire drivers that meet certain criteria. Checkr’s MVR rules help Hawx’s team efficiently evaluate a candidate’s MVR and determine the report’s status.  Checkr's reporting of historical data has also been beneficial for Hawx, providing peace of mind in the event of an audit. "Our top priority was to have a record of past events and selections in case of an audit, and Checkr had already taken care of that."

Hawx has experienced significant time savings by partnering with Checkr, as they've automated random drug testing, introduced custom rules for MVR checks, and relied on Checkr reports as a crucial resource for executive-level analysis and decision-making.

I would definitely recommend Checkr and not just for what they currently offer. Checkr is always growing and trying to improve, and it's clear that Checkr is creating a well-rounded platform. We've always been very happy with the way Checkr works.
