Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a customer satisfaction metric designed to measure customer loyalty and predict business growth. NPS is a valuable tool for gathering customer feedback to benchmark and improve a company’s performance. It’s known as the gold standard of customer experience metrics, used by companies like Apple, Zoom, and Salesforce. 

The results are based on a single question: "How likely are you to recommend our company to a friend or colleague?" Customers respond on a scale of 0 (not at all likely) to 10 (extremely likely). Based on these numerical responses, customers are categorized as follows:

  • Promotors (9-10): Loyal, happy customers who will continue buying your product and recommending your business to others
  • Passives (7-8): Satisfied customers that might easily be convinced to switch to a competitor
  • Detractors (6-0): Indifferent or unhappy customers who could damage your reputation with negative word-of-mouth

To find your NPS, subtract the percentage of Detractors from the percentage of Promoters. For instance, if 10% of your respondents are Detractors and 50% are Promoters, your NPS is 40 (50-10). Any score above 0 is considered good, but scores above 50 are considered excellent.
