In 2024, Checkr celebrated our ten-year anniversary—a decade of revolutionizing the background check industry to meet the needs of modern hiring teams. We remain committed to helping our customers drive efficiency and transform the way they hire exceptional talent. This year we celebrated another exciting milestone as there are now more than 100,000 customers using Checkr. This growth is fueled by our accelerated innovation for the enterprise sector and reflected by our company revenue surpassing $700 million.
Company accomplishments highlighted continued growth
We’re proud to have again been named to the Forbes Cloud 100 for the seventh consecutive year, which is the definitive ranking of the top 100 private cloud companies in the world. We were also recognized on the list of Y Combinator’s Top Companies by Revenue, while our CEO and co-founder, Daniel Yanisse, was recognized on The Software Report’s Top 25 HR Software Executives.
We also launched Checkr Trust, a new screening product that enhances trust and safety within marketplaces and communities. This instantaneous, scalable, and cost-effective solution enables flexible and fair decision-making by effectively detecting risk signals through instant access to extensive criminal data and court records. This addition, along with Checkr Pay which launched last year, continues our expansion of products for the future of work.
Additionally, we introduced personal background checks to enable individuals to order their own reports—to preview their own background check results or screen someone else to build trust and ensure safety, like nannies or housekeepers.
Customers accelerated hiring with confidence
We strive to create a delightful experience for all customers, from small businesses to large enterprise organizations. These customers rely on us to modernize the hiring process and we’re excited to continue shaping the future of work with them.
Here are a few customer highlights from 2024:
Thistle is a plant-forward meal delivery service on a mission to make it easy to get and stay healthy while improving the sustainability of our food system. They were searching for a more efficient and automated background check platform that could provide faster turnaround times and support their goal of hiring 400-500 employees annually. Since switching to Checkr, Thistle has reduced their background check turnaround time to less than 48 hours, which significantly decreases time-to-hire and allows for faster onboarding.
Purple Innovation designs and manufactures mattresses offering superior comfort and pressure relief. From innovation and manufacturing, to staffing their retail stores and ecommerce operations, Purple hires for a wide variety of roles. Checkr has been an all-in-one solution, providing criminal background checks, MVR checks, and drug testing in one platform. Since partnering with Checkr, Purple has reduced drug testing turnaround times by 50%.
Adventure Nannies is an industry leader in recruiting and screening nannies for families. They were looking for a more efficient and reliable background check solution that provided background checks, MVR checks, education verifications, and reference checks. Since partnering with Checkr, Adventure Nannies has reduced their turnaround time by 85%, enabling them to match families with qualified caregivers quickly.
Sailormen, Inc., a franchisee of Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits restaurants, operates over 150 locations throughout Florida and Georgia with over 2,000 team members. Processing about 1,000 candidates annually, they were searching for two main qualities in a background check provider: simplicity and speed. Since partnering with Checkr, Sailormen was able to transition from a lengthy paper-based process to a fully digital format, including integrating their background checks with their ATS vendor Workstream. In addition, they’ve seen a cost savings of $10 per background check.
A Net Promoter Score (NPS) is considered the gold standard for customer satisfaction and loyalty and is a valuable tool for us to gather feedback to benchmark and improve our product. We’re thrilled to report after our most recent customer survey that our NPS is 60, which is our highest score to date. Our score continues to be well above the industry average showing our dedication to customer-centricity.
The employers and organizations who use Checkr every day are the most valuable source of feedback and we’re proud to have been awarded G2’s “Leader” status for the fifth year in a row. In fact, we were named the Market Leader among over 150 background check solutions for the highest scores in both product satisfaction and market presence.
We continue to make investments to revolutionize background checks and HR technology, which included the appointments of Ilan Frank as Chief Product Officer and Luca Bonmassar as Chief Technology Officer, and the promotion of Lindsey Scrase to Chief Operating Officer to fuel this growth.
With their leadership, our teams worked tirelessly to launch new features and product improvements and continue to deliver an exceptional experience for customers and candidates alike.
Product enhancements elevated customer satisfaction
The employers and organizations that utilize Checkr on a daily basis provide invaluable feedback to us. Through customer advisory boards, product feedback sessions, and survey responses, we implemented numerous product enhancements over the past year, including:
Offered more screenings
- Post-hire drug screening: Customers can manage their employment drug testing program with the addition of random drug and alcohol testing and post-accident and reasonable suspicion (PARS) options.
- Department of Transportation (DOT) checks: Manage comprehensive FMCSA-compliant background checks with Checkr, including MVR reports, CDLIS searches, employment verification, drug and alcohol testing, physical evaluations, and drug and alcohol clearinghouse queries.
- Multi-degree education verification: Candidates can submit multiple education histories instead of just their highest degree, allowing you to verify all necessary educational qualifications for your specific job requirements.
- Quick employment verification: Enable candidates to complete employment verification in minutes by connecting to their payroll provider for instant employment history checks.
- UK Right to Work: Verify a candidate's right to work in the United Kingdom as a British or Irish citizen or foreign national. Approved by the Home Office, digital verification is available using a verified identity services provider or sharecode.
Enhanced platform features
- Redesigned reports dashboard: This major upgrade enhances your background check experience, introducing a modern visual style and a more intuitive layout to help you find the information you need even faster.
- Aliases: Candidates sometimes have records under names other than their legal name, like maiden names or nicknames. Easily add aliases to your background check packages to find up to 27% more records.
- Virtual AI Assistant: Receive personalized responses from our support chatbot within the Checkr Dashboard. Available 24/7, this tool helps answer questions quickly and accurately.
- SMS notifications for candidates: Add a candidate’s phone number to send background check invitations by SMS. Additionally, you can add a candidate’s first name for personalized invitations.
Improved adjudication tools
- Assess Lite: We upgraded our built-in record filtering tool, so you can adjudicate candidates faster and more consistently—and it’s free.
- Managed adjudication: Our new automated actions for Assess decisions brings the full managed adjudication experience to Assess Premium. You can now fully automate adjudication when your eligibility rules conclusively assess a candidate as eligible, or ineligible. This also includes the option to automatically request Candidate Stories and pause adverse action when candidate stories are received.
- Case management: A new Tasks page enables adjudicators to reduce time-to-decision working collaboratively within the Checkr dashboard. Adjudicators can assign and re-assign background check reports, make annotations and post comments, and view and filter cases by status and owner
- Postal adverse action: Select a delivery method (postal or email) when initiating adverse action. This option is available regardless of candidate location or work location to give you maximum flexibility and control to comply with evolving legislation.
Added new integrations
We offer 100+ pre-built integrations with industry-leading ATS, HRIS, and HR onboarding tools so you can connect Checkr with your current tech stack for streamlined hiring and onboarding. This year, we added more than 20 new integrations, including iCIMS Prime, UKG Pro and UKG Ready, Oracle Taleo, Dayforce, Gem, and more.
Additionally, Checkr received both the Workday “Innovation Partner” and “Design Approved” badges, recognizing us as a valuable complement to Workday products and an easy-to-use integration.
Checkr.org continued to build a fairer future of work
Our commitment to Pledge 1% fuels our corporate social responsibility work and our Checkr.org foundation. We’ve committed 1% of our product, profit, and equity towards advancing fair chance hiring—our social impact focus. This year, our team continued building a fairer future of work through many programs and events.
Checkr.org foundation
Our new website offers educational resources and inspiring stories from policymakers, business leaders, thought leaders, and talent with records to promote fair chance hiring. Among these helpful resources for employers, the Fair Chance Law Tracker shows where fair chance laws are in place and provides details about the regulations. The Record Relief Tracker shows which states and jurisdictions allow criminal record clearance, such as Clean Slate laws.
At SXSW in Austin, Texas, we debuted our live simulation of reentry from incarceration, “Beyond the Bars.” This in-person, gamified experience tackles the many challenges of reentry, including finding employment. Participants who completed the 20-minute simulation found the experience both sobering and educational.
Corporate social responsibility
Checkr received a 2024 Silver Anthem Award for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the Hiring Initiative category. The Anthem Awards celebrate purpose-driven initiatives making a profound global impact, and we're proud to be recognized for our efforts to build a fairer future of work.
We also celebrated the graduation of eight apprentices from our Fair Chance Apprenticeship. This 12-month earn-and-learn program in our San Francisco office provided job training and formal learning programs to create career pathways for those with an arrest or conviction history.
We also launched Catalyst, an apprenticeship program to bring justice-impacted individuals into the workforce with support for hiring and training this overlooked talent pool. To support this, we are committing $1 million to fund two cohorts of apprenticeships outside of Checkr over the next two years.
Checkr Academy–our free learning hub—launched the Fair Reviewer Certificate. This hour-long module teaches HR professionals how to comply with EEOC standards when assessing background checks, best practices for implementing fair assessments, and more.
Employees are encouraged to use their 20 paid Volunteer Time Off hours each year to help our mission partners, including Breakthrough, The Last Mile, Defy Ventures, and more. These volunteer programs include providing coaching and tutoring, mock employment interviews, job fairs, and business pitch bootcamps to justice-impacted individuals.
Looking to the future
We’re excited for another year of product innovation to deliver an exceptional customer and candidate experience. Our focus is always to meet the evolving needs of our customers, and this next year’s product enhancements include expanded healthcare and transportation screenings, international reference checks, added capabilities for education and employment verifications, additional partner integrations, and a reimagined platform to enhance operational efficiency and hiring insights.
